Summary of MH& HG Pensioners’ Action Group Meeting on Wednesday October 20th 2010

1.     Notices were read out.
2.     Questions for Lobby of MP:

Only a few were raised e.g. Why Lynne,  Minister (?) for Equality  was absent from House when rape offenders anonymity was discussed; Why was UK Film Board closed when for every £1 investigated it had created £5 and had supported films which pensioners enjoyed rather than those commercially led. (Celia may have what Steve Ballard said). Only he and Committee members are going to the lobby. Another member showed interest and I wrote down the details  for her but she then said she may not be able to come.

Meeting  at 1.45 inside Westminster tube station at top of escalators Wednesday October 27th was emphasised

3.     Ideas for future meetings

a)     Hospice next month + reminiscence stories?- (keep them ready for any spare time we may have during a meeting.)

b)     Talk from Metropolitan Care and repair

c)     A talk about healthy eating especially shopping for One.

d)    Planning for Old Age – choices for housing etc. Celia because of her former job could give this talk.

e)     Workshop on computer use- but  we felt it was too difficult  to organised as would need a computer each for at least 2 members. Pamela said that there were now 8 week computer  courses running  at Muswell Hill library .

f)     Outings- Theatre visits and the Phoenix when it showed transmissions form Opera Houses etc.  ( Celia may have more notes on these ideas) Celia called for minibus driver volunteers and Steve Ballard and Audrey Evers  said they may.

4.     Make the Most of the Mobile Phone

Steve gave a short talk on the 2 different types of payment mainly linked with how much usage and the use of your top up card at many outlets e.g Sainsbury’s . He used monthly credit  of £20 and not his landline but never for international calls. As his wife used the opposite they  always knew who the phone ringing was for! Computer phoning and Skype were briefly discussed.

3 groups emerged and were led by Ashraf Choudhury  from Age Concern Haringey ( who had earlier introduced himself and asked for befrienders which were much needed  in the N10 and N6 area.) , Audrey Evers , Steve Ballard.

The groups focussed on a) sending , retrieving and reading texts; b) storing and retrieving contact numbers ;c) switching from predictive to non predictive text . It was a lively and worthwhile session,  but some members either did not have mobiles or did not need help in using them but they just chatted.

Ashraf drew the raffle.
